Jewelry Care
Preserve the beauty of your pieces
Fine jewelry lasts generations when cared for correctly. The following guidelines are based on industry best practice and apply to precious metals and gemstones. When in doubt, we recommend conservative care and periodic professional inspection.
Daily Wear
Simple habits help avoid damage and keep pieces looking their best.
- Avoid chemicals: Perfume, hairspray, cosmetics, sunscreen and household cleaners can dull metals, erode solder and harm certain stones. Put jewelry on after applying these products.
- Remove during activity: Take off rings and bracelets during exercise, gardening, swimming and bathing. Chlorine and abrasion can damage settings and surfaces.
- Remove before sleep: Sheets and movement can snag prongs and chains; overnight wear also accelerates buildup of oils and soap.
- Store separately: Keep pieces of different hardness apart (e.g. diamonds can scratch gold, sapphires and softer stones). Use soft pouches, boxes or compartmented trays.
Storage
Proper storage reduces scratching, tarnish and accidental impact.
- Store in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity. Anti-tarnish cloth or strips help for silver and some alloys.
- Keep necklaces and bracelets fastened or laid flat to avoid tangling; hang only if supported by a padded surface.
- Rings and earrings are best kept in individual slots or pouches so stones and metal do not contact other pieces.
Cleaning at Home
Cleaning method depends on the materials. When unsure, use only a soft, dry cloth.
- Diamonds and corundum (ruby, sapphire): These are durable and can be cleaned with a soft brush and lukewarm water with a drop of mild, phosphate-free soap. Rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasives.
- Emeralds and other treated or porous stones: Wipe gently with a soft, damp cloth. Do not soak or use ultrasonic or steam cleaners; moisture and heat can affect treatments or stability.
- Pearls and organic materials: Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth after wear. Never soak; avoid chemicals and ultrasonic cleaning. Store away from direct heat and allow pearls to breathe (avoid sealed plastic).
- Gold and platinum: A soft brush with mild soapy water is generally safe for metal; dry thoroughly. Rhodium-plated white gold may need periodic re-plating over time; we can advise.
Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaners unless we have confirmed the piece is suitable. These can loosen settings and damage certain stones and treatments.
When to Seek Professional Care
We recommend an annual check for pieces worn regularly. Book a visit if you notice:
- Loose or chipped stones, or prongs that catch on fabric
- Clasps, hinges or links that no longer fasten securely
- Visible wear, scratches or loss of polish on the metal
- Discoloration or cloudiness that gentle cleaning does not resolve
SANSER offers lifetime care services for our pieces: setting checks, refurbishment, polishing and resizing (where technically possible). To arrange an appointment or request a quote, please contact us. We will advise on timing, cost and any limitations (e.g. engravings or complex designs may affect resizing).
